There’s an awful lot of content out there, and I’m afraid we’re just getting started. As more and more people become enamored with the idea of being content creators, the information overload we now experience will turn into a literal flood of blog posts, podcasts, YouTube videos, and social media posts.
That’s why you have to use a couple of unconventional tactics and strategies in order to stand out from the crowd, grow your audience, and even monetize your content.
1. Learn The Rules. Break The Rules
2021 belongs to those who are able to learn the rules like true professionals, and then bend and even break the rules according to their creative needs.
Maybe you use the same tactics as everyone else to grab people’s attention with a genius headline, but stay away from the most popular formats (listicles, step-by-step guides.) Maybe you present the article in a fashion unlike anything else within your niche.
But, first, you must learn the rules, you must learn the ABCs of blogging and then go beyond them. You must develop as many additional skills as you can (marketing, sales, copywriting, networking, social media, podcasts creation, graphic design), so you can then create original and engaging content.
2. Get Readers — By Any Means Necessary
If you’re just starting out in 2021, social proof is working against you. Big time. Most of the popular niches are overcrowded and oversaturated, but also dominated by popular blogs.
Because of this, it’s necessary that you work towards getting as many readers as possible. As fast as possible.
Build up enough social proof, so you are perceived as an authority within your field.

There was a time when you could effectively “build it, and they will come,” but it’s no longer the case. Evidence of this? The plethora of growth tools available.
If you want to become a successful blogger in 2021, you’ve got to spend the vast majority of your time working towards building an audience, as fast as possible:
- Comment on other articles.
- Deploy the Trojan Horse Strategy.
- Distribute your content across as many platforms as possible.
- Create derivative content, such as podcasts, videos, and distribute them.
- Take advantage of new features launched by popular social media outlets (YouTube shorts, Instagram Reels, etc.)
3. Step in the Arena
2021 will belong to the blogger who has the courage to step into the arena. The blogger who writes their truth, even if their fingers shake against the keyboard, the blogger who stands for something, even if they might fall.
At the same time, 2021 will belong to the blogger who can share empathetic tutorials, who can account for the probability of failure and can provide a failsafe when that happens.
Ask yourself: are you truly, passionately, unapologetically, writing about the topics that set your soul on fire?
If you’re not, you’d better spend an entire day trying to rummage through the most hidden drawers of your mind for the topics that give you the chance to truly punch those damn keys.
4. Go Hyperniche
Most popular topics are dominated by blogs with over 5 years of experience, tens of thousands of readers, and an entire editorial team or an impressive team of contributors.
That’s why it makes sense, if you want to become a true blogstar in 2021, to work on building a hyperniche blog.
Try to either:
- Connect two seemingly unrelate fields in an attempt to attract people who are interested in both.
- Find ultra-specific problems only you can solve.
5. Build a Community
People used to go online in search of information. It was knowledge they craved. Now they want community. They desire the accountability that comes with being part of a group.

6. Content Is King, but Distribution Is Queen
As we’ve discussed previously, the ecosystem allows you to distribute your content effectively across a plethora of platforms.
Take advantage of this.
Think in terms of:
- Platforms you own (your blog and email list)
- Platforms you can rent (social media platforms, YouTube, Medium, content aggregators, etc.)
- Platforms you can borrow (other people’s blogs and platforms)
There’s no real disadvantage.
Keep in mind there’s a big difference between having a presence on a certain platform and actively working towards building an audience on that platform. Choose to distribute everywhere, but only work on building an audience on platforms you can become a part of the conversation.
In other words, spend most of your time on platforms you love, but share your content across all platforms.
7. Provide Eureka Moments. As Often as You Can.
Here’s the truth.
Most people are busy, tired, and kind of lazy. Attention spans are dropping.
It is therefore important to write short articles that provide a clear takeaway and a valid course of action. Articles that provide readers with a eureka moment.
Make them fall in love with you by giving them the sort of advice that lies just outside the peripheral vision of the mind; cutting edge advice that can only be the result of spending more time thinking about a topic than just about anyone else.
Don’t write more. Think more.
Then simplify your message. Clarify. Try to provide value, not just information. Try to stand out from the crowd by sharing clear and actionable advice in less than 1,000 words.
If you want to become a successful blogger in 2021, you’ve got to deploy at least 4 of these 7 strategies. Learn the rules, and then experiment with the best ways in which you can effectively bend or break them. Spend 60-70% of your time, especially when you’re just starting out, on growing those numbers. Be willing to write your truth, no matter what. Work on building a community around your blog, and distribute your content across all the relevant platforms. Go hyperniche, thinking about an ultra-specific demographic and psychographic audience you can best add value to, and provide your audience with eureka moments.
