The blogger is a strange creature. Almost mythological.
The way a blogger wastes ideas is quite fascinating.
Be honest, how much time do you spend thinking about ideas for articles?
Quite a lot, eh?
Then, wouldn’t it make a lot of sense to re-use the best ones?
The Magic of Repetition
There are a number of reasons you should have a number of recurring themes and topics you address over and over again:
- These ideas are your primary contribution.
- These ideas turn you into an authority in your niche.
- These ideas need to be written about, over and over again, because no one’s paying much attention the first few times.
- These ideas need to be addressed from different angle, so more people can understand them, internalize them, or act upon them.
Recurring themes are great. You become a more effective blogger because of them.
Here’s an example:
I write a lot about the fact that “do what you love” is a myth, a rather harmful cliche that in real life tends to become counter-productive real fast.

And since a related topic is the fact that we must fall in love with the pain, the sacrifice of hard work, this article also qualifies: Nine Reasons Why You Must Fall in Love With Working Hard
Of course, I write in most of my articles about the importance of hard work, or the fact that we fall in and out of love with our passion, or that passion literally means to suffer.
This is one of my recurring themes.
Another theme is the fact that I believe life to be pain. Not suffering, but pain. I write about this topic over and over again.
These ideas I write about are my trademark, so to speak, the same way “punch the damn keys” has become the Art of Blogging’s unofficial mantra.
What Are Your Main Themes?
What are the ideas you are drawn to? The ones you tend to write about, over and over again?
What are the ideas you think matter and are worth discussing the most?
Pick 3–4 of those ideas and write about them. Consciously. Strategically.
Make sure to write from different angles, in different ways, so your readers get it.
That’s why blogging is mostly reblogging. We need to say the same thing in different ways a couple of times, so our readers get it.
Now, there’s a bit of an art about this as well. You can tapdance around the same topic for a while, and depending on how much time and energy you’re willing to invest, you can make old ideas seem kind of new.
But there’s got to be this main theme. Something you strongly believe in. And then you have to write about it from different points of view, so your readers get it.
The truth is that you don’t have to come up with an original idea for every single article you write.
Well, originality is kind of like perfection… it doesn’t exist.
Rather than trying to be original, you should try to be persuasive.
And if you want to win friends and influence people, you’ve got to find the ideas that are worth talking about, over and over again, and talk about them, over and over again.
