[Blogging Mindset] Crawl Before You Walk2 min read

Here’s something that I see a lot of new bloggers do: a lot of research. They read everything they can about blogging, social media, etc. They read tutorials, e-books, guides, watch videos, interviews with successful bloggers, and then… nothing.

Them doing their research is a way to procrastinate while feeling like they’ve accomplished something.

They mistake motion for action, and they never address the feeling of being overwhelmed or anxious or doubtful. Basically, they are just sitting on a rocking chair, expecting to go somewhere.

And the build this sort of strange expectation that someday they will be successful.

In other words, most bloggers want to be able to run a marathon before learning how to walk.

Because the inexorable truth is that you must try to walk, not just read about walking. You must get it wrong, over and over again, to get it right for the first time.

Heck, you must crawl before you even start to walk.

Know your why.

If you don’t have a compelling vision, you’re going to have to push yourself to get the stuff done. And sometimes it’s going to be almost impossible to do so. A vision pulls you. If you know why you’re blogging, it’s going to create a strong enough pull that it’s going to feel effortless.

Know your why. Know what is it that you are getting out of this blogging thing.

Focus on the basics.

You don’t have to know everything about blogging to get started. You don’t have to create brilliant content to get started. You don’t have to be an ace at networking.

Crawl before you walk.

Make sure you have a decent blog layout. Great! Now punch the damn keys.

Have no fear of perfection. It doesn’t exist.

Also, never forget the fact that this is a process: you can improve.

Comment on other blogs, send guest posts to the blogs that you admire, and use whatever social networking sites you already use to tell others about your blog.

While you punch the damn keys, you do your research.

This is one of the most underrated aspects of blogging. You can do your research while punching the damn keys.

Don’t wait until you’re old to have babies.

Just write!

Get stuff done, product content, and learn how to produce even better content.

You can alway rewrite and republish old posts, so don’t worry if your content is not perfect.

Blogging is hard, as any other creative endeavor is.

Instead of getting overwhelmed trying to perfect every piece of your blogging, do the basics to start with and go from there.

As they say, you don’t have to be great to start, but you will never be great unless you start.

I’ve been planning a post called “Why I STOPPED Reading Blogs about Blogging.” Obviously, I have not stopped but there comes a point where you have to #*%@ or get off the pot!

    • Cristian Mihai

Well, don’t stop. Just prioritize punching those damn keys instead.

Man, you are so right. Even when I don’t feel like posting, I will end up doing it from bed as I can’t bear to not do my daily diligence.

Once again, you’ve really encouraged me. It’s so easy to obsessively focus on method rather than simply doing it. Thanks again for your uplifting content!
