What does it take to be a leader in your niche?

Bravery.

You need the guts to alienate the wrong people in order to resonate with the right people. You need to stick to your convictions when people tell you you’re wrong.

Blogging in order to please everyone is a recipe for failure. Your success will be determined by how much you believe in your vision. Think about it… if your audience is more qualified to write your blog than you are, why should they read your words?

Don’t get me wrong—feedback in the form of comments, emails, and posts that take issue with something you’ve said is invaluable. All feedback contains a lesson. Realize, though, that the lesson may have nothing to do with what the person giving the feedback thinks they’re telling you.

The fact is, if no one hates you, you’re doing something wrong. Trying to please everyone is the goal of mass media. That’s why it sucks. We’re supposed to be smarter, right?

But day after day, bloggers back down and second guess themselves. Soon their content is watered down in the hope that no one is offended, but by that time, no one is reading.

Focus on the right people, and let the wrong people say what they will.

  1. My favourite posts have always been the ones I’ve thought ‘hmm… do I dare publish this?’.

    Sometimes I hover over that publish button, but when I do this posts are always the best received in terms of views, likes and more importantly engagement.

    So far I have never had the backlash imagined, just shaped my audience to be people who like what I write.

At the University of Sydney he holds the 150th Anniversary Chair of Science and the Mind.) says something inspiring in a documentary about the subconscious: If I was working in a field that the crowd was interested in, and not be at the forefront of something new; then I might as well go to the beach.
