Are you burdened by the blogger’s curse?
Many a blogger is hindered with a trait that damages productivity and constrains their ultimate potential.
See if you recognize any of these seven symptoms in yourself:
- You start writing, stop half way and hit delete
- You often feel like you are your own worst critic
- You never feel like you’ve done the best you could
- You second-guess your ideas, even when you know better
- Other bloggers make you feel inadequate
- There’s always something more to learn
- Writing would be so much more enjoyable if you could just relax
Thankfully, if you do recognize any of the above symptoms, you are definitely not alone. In fact, I would say each and every blogger I’ve met has felt the same at least once (and likely more often then they’d like to admit).
So relax, this curse doesn’t have to be permanent and is simple to treat. It even has a name.
Ah, the internal editor. Thanks for the kicker towards the end; lovely little ounce of encouragement. I’ve struggled with the internal editor for many, many years and it seems at this point on my journey I have just started to find when she takes over.
I usually try to take breaks from it all, especially social media. This can be toxic to a degree when pieces need to be out asap. For those other deadlines that rip me to shreds, I just remind myself of where I am and put out all my thoughts first.Worrying won’t make the words appear faster and will actually ruin the work. I’ll finish my coffee, cleanse the palette with some stand-up, then continue my transition from writer to editor. ❤

Of course I think I have never done the best I could. However, having been school in a daily newspaper I know that when a deadline looms you have to let go. My editor was constantly tell me: “It doesn’t need to be perfect, but it does need to fill ten column inches and it has to be ready by 10 a.m.”

Definitely relate to this! It’s actually made me delete entire blogs/social medias because things haven’t been my idea of perfect! Definitely trying to control the inner editor this time around x

I totally relate. I edit to the best of my ability, and will still come across a typo that has been on the post for maybe a year or more, depending on post age…! Perfectionism is unattainable. And comparison with other bloggers can definitely be dangerous. But really, we each offer our own unique perspective.

Thanks for the encouragement and great post. We bloggers go through it once and awhile.
Writer vs. Editor can definitely be a pain in the butt..but also fun. It’s challenging and helps you hone in on your skills.

I like your post. your post brings a different perspective, different idea , different thinking process to the world of blogging. writer vs editor, perfectionism. quest for ideas are what we do we don’t realise. your blog makes us realise. nice good work.

Great post! Very helpful not just for blogging but other kinds of writing (in my day job I write research articles as a professor and struggle with that perfectionism editor)

Great post; I see myself in most of these. Bad habits die hard. Thanks for the post and counsel.

YES. Except I’m very passionate about my subject and I don’t really feel inadequate as a blogger, per say. I just feel like I’m saying a bunch BS sometimes that no one understands or cares to read. But it’s my blog, so screw ’em. 🙂

I always start typing things out and then quickly delete everything. I hate myself for doing that.
