There are two kinds of bloggers: those who use blogging as a creative outlet, and those who’ve read that you can make money by blogging and want a piece of the cake.
When you decided to become a blogger, you probably started by trying to learn everything you could about becoming a blogger and undoubtedly came across this word: “monetize.”
And maybe after reading a few articles (or maybe some interviews with the bloggers who are earning tens of thousands of dollars a month) you thought that you could do this “monetize” thing as well.
After all, it’s about using some affiliate links and selling your first e-course or e-book to your avid fans. And no one buys anything from you. NO ONE.
It’s easy to lose heart and quit. It’s also easy to half-ass everything (from content creation to networking) because you’re not earning enough to become a full-time professional blogger.
And this is when most blogs find themselves in hell, which is the definitive defeat that echoes with every new blog post that is published.
So… can you make money blogging?
The short answer is: yes.
You just have to forget about making money in order to make money.
Doesn’t make much sense, huh?
Blogs don’t make money. Blogs help others. They help people by:
- Building an online community
You must blog in order to genuinely help your readers. Imagine who your readers are, what they look like, what they want most in this world, and figure out ways to help them.
No matter the topic, give the people what they want.
Patience is a virtue
A while ago I had to coach someone who wanted to make money from their blog in a month or so.
I’m not saying its impossible, but as a beginner, it probably is.
This blog earned money from its first month, but my first blog didn’t.
Do not set foolish expectations because that’s a shortcut to breaking your own heart.
To make money from your blog, you need to put the time in to find your ideal reader, to get them to come back to you again and again, and hopefully, someday, to trust you enough to purchase a product from you.
But to cultivate this following, it is going to take serious time. You can’t rush it, no matter what.
If you want to make money from blogging, you must treat it like a business. This means that you must show up, do the work at 100% every time, and work on building proper relationships.
Most folks never realize that we are not being paid for our time, but for our contribution.
How valuable do you think you are?
How valuable are your blog posts? Do they add to the conversation in your niche? Are you an expert?
Ask yourself the hard questions, because lying to yourself will make it almost impossible to earn money from your blog.
