Why do you blog?
Simple question, right?
What you choose to answer determines how successful a blogger you’ll be. And rather than reporting news, or covering a certain topic or two, or attempting to make money, sell products, I am going to tell you that you should focus on making your readers better at what they do, whether that skill is blogging, marketing, or gardening.
Believe it or not, blogging is all about adding value to other people’s lives, and in this post I am going to explain how powerful this model truly is.
The Scarcity Mentality
Here’s the thing about most people: they have a scarcity mentality. They are constantly asking themselves, “What’s in it for me?” They want to negotiate any deal in such a way that they end up winning. Nothing else matters.
But if you want to be a successful blogger, then you mustn’t think like everyone else.
Take this blog for instance: each post helps you to become better at blogging. They all add up to form an archive of knowledge, something that will be helpful to others in the future, just as much as this knowledge is helpful today.
Rather than asking yourself what’s in it for you as a blogger, ask yourself how can you add value to your readers.
What good can you do in this world?
This was a question Benjamin Franklin used to ask himself quite often.
To add value means to emphasize quality over quantity, means to build a loyal and enthusiastic audience by helping them solve certain issues and overcome obstacles.
Ask yourself: is your content helping someone else become better?
And do not lie, because the lies you tell yourself usually keep you from evolving.
What’s in it for you?
Well, the truth is that you will be presented with unique opportunities to make money online. Because you have proven your expertise on a certain topic time and time again, people will want to work with, will want to gain more access to you, or read more of your content.And they will be willing to pay for it.
Okay… great, but what do I have to do?
It’s simple: focus your time and energy on helping readers.
And you are only limited by your imagination.
- provide tips and tricks on an important skill related to your niche
- answer questions your readers might have.
- share lessons you’ve learned.
- provide useful information and resources.
Another obvious example is that this article is an example of providing value; not only am I trying to explain this concept to you, but also teach you how to add it to your blogging skills.
